ECC und "Soziale Konstruktion von Technologie"

Paradigmenwechsel auf Serpentinen.

Die Frage, ob Wissenschaft sozial konstruiert ist, wurde auf anderen scienceblogs schon lebhaft diskutiert. Weniger kontrovers ist sicher, daß Technik in gewissem Rahmen sozial konstruiert ist. Ein Beispiel dafür, nämlich die Entwicklung der Kryptographie in den letzten 3 Jahrzehnten, diskutiert "Elliptic Curve Cryptography: The Serpentine Course of a Paradigm Shift" von Hibner-Koblitz-Menezez.

Den Artikel hatte ich in diesem Beitrag schon besprochen, jetzt soll es nur um den letzten Abschnitt "Social Construction of Science and Technology" gehen.

Zunächst wird dort noch einmal die Geschichte der Science Wars rekapituliert:
bis Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts seien Historiker davon ausgegangen, daß Wissenschaft und Technik sich stetig entwickeln, immer auf dem vorhergehenden aufbauend. Thomas Kuhn vertrat dann 1962 die These von den 'wissenschaftlichen Revolutionen':

that the most important developments in the history of science occur by means of a radical challenge to earlier conceptions. In his view social and professional influences have a great effect on the direction of science as a whole, and should not be invoked simply to explain the "mistakes." In fact, he believed in what later came to be called the "symmetry principle," which states that historians should use the same methods to study the emergence of a scientific theory or school of thought independently of whether modern science regards the theory as correct or incorrect.

Kuhn's Theorie (daß Revolutionen zu kompletten Paradigmenwechseln in den Wissenschaften führen) wurde dann auf die Spitze getrieben von Lacan, Feyerabend, Shiva, Latour, denen zufolge Wissenschaft genau so sozial konstruiert sei wie Literatur, Politik, Religion. Das ganze kulminierte schließlich in Alan Sokals bekanntem Artikel (TvF 97).

It is tempting for scientists to revel in Sokal's spoof of the nonsensical jargon of the postmodernists, react with annoyance to the tone of sociologists of science such as Elliott, and dismiss as ridiculous any attempt to describe a school of scientific thought as a "social construct."

schreiben Hibler-Koblitz-Menezez, argumentieren dann aber (Seite 34), daß man doch aus sozialwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen zu Wissenschaft und Technik durchaus 'Unterhaltsames' lernen könne. (Dafür bringen sie einige Beispiele aus den Gender Studies, siehe den Beitrag von vorhin.) Für die Sozialgeschichte der ECC kommen die Autoren dann jedenfalls zu eher unspektakulären Schlußfolgerungen:

Our examination of the history of ECC offers no support to those who would argue that technology follows an inevitable path that is independent of societal constraints. Rather, the evidence points toward ways in which technology is socially constructed:
• path-dependence -- the importance of timing, the role of happenstance;
• the role of the military in intervening at crucial stages to send the technology in a different direction from that favored by market forces;
• closure -- the need eventually to reach a consensus and stop most debate, even if some basic questions remain unanswered;
• narrative inversion -- a desire to use high-status terms such as "science" and "mathematical proof" that becomes more fervent even as the field is showing itself again and again to be as much an art as a science.
