Alexander Knoll ist Biologe. Für seine Promotion am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie versucht er, die DNA-Reparatur und -Rekombination in Pflanzen besser zu verstehen.
Emanuel Heitlinger promoviert an den Universitäten Karlsruhe und Edinburgh. Er untersucht mit Hilfe von Hochdurchsatz-DNA-Sequenzierung die Evolution eines Wirt-Parasit-Systems.

Über das Blog
Vor grünem Hintergrund findet man auf dem Banner unseres Blogs eine Collage von Objekten, stellvertretend für unsere Interessen und die Thematik unserer Posts:
Auf der rechten Seite liegt ein phylogenetischer Baum aus den Notizbüchern Darwins über dem schematischen Bandenmuster einer Agarose-Gelelektrophorese. Wir wollen versuchen die Geschichte der Biologie und evolutionsbiologische Konzepte mit modernen Methoden und Erkenntnissen der Molekularbiologie zu verbinden.
Die Fachgebiete unserer jeweiligen Forschung werden daneben auch durch die beiden Organismen im Banner verdeutlicht: Alexander Knoll arbeitet mit dem pflanzlichen Modellorganismus Arabidopsis thaliana (Ackerschmalwand), von dem eine Blüte links im Banner zu sehen ist. Der aus Ernst Haeckels "Kunstformen der Natur" entnommene Bandwurm Tetrarhynchus longicollis (Tafel 75, Nummer 11) steht als Fischparasit stellvertretend für Emanuel Heitlingers Arbeit am Aalparasiten Anguillicola crassus.
